At our recent quarterly meeting of the Cape Cod Hunger Network, I found myself humbled by the scope of work and unwavering dedication of the food access heroes gathered around the table. As they shared the day-to-day reality of need in our community, along with the thoughtful, forward-looking actions they take to meet it, I was reminded just how much care, creativity, and persistence this work demands.
As one of only two food producers in the room, I also recognize an important truth: locally produced food, while deeply valuable, can sometimes cost more than industrially created options. And this winter has made one thing especially clear, need doesn’t get buried under the snow. Every pantry has felt the strain of last fall’s government shutdown, the pressure of the holiday season, and now, with the cold fully upon us, the need remains as urgent as ever.
Cold storage for perishables is essential to food pantries. Some rely on basic refrigerators, others on stand-up freezers, and some on industrial walk-in systems. As a food producer, being able to process and freeze healthy local seafood is key to providing Cape Cod pantries with a nutritious, local source of protein.
After our meeting at Lower Cape Outreach, we toured their recently renovated pantry, stocked with fresh vegetables, meats, seafood, and dairy. Volunteers stood ready to welcome the many customers who would soon arrive to shop with dignity and choice.
The tour was a powerful reminder that behind every stocked shelf is a network of support that makes it all possible. But pantries cannot meet this growing, year-round need alone. Investments in essentials like cold storage and processing capacity are what allow healthy, local foods to reach families when they need them most.
As winter continues, we invite our community to stand with the Cape Cod Hunger Network and our partner pantries. Your donation helps ensure that nutritious,
perishable food can be safely stored, shared with dignity, and made available to every neighbor who walks through pantry doors.
